AdubianewsThe Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has expressed deep frustration with the government’s decision to raise the Energy Sector Levy by GH₵1 per litre of fuel, labeling the move a betrayal, particularly in light of the recently agreed 15% reduction in transport fares.
The union finds the timing of the levy increase alarming, as it was introduced just days after nationwide fare reductions were put into effect by drivers.
In response, the GPRTU has issued a warning, threatening to call a nationwide strike if the government fails to address their concerns by 10 June 2025.
On Thursday, 5 June, GPRTU’s Industrial Relations Officer, Abass Imoro, spoke on Citi FM, criticizing the government for a lack of transparency during negotiations.
He revealed that officials did not disclose plans for the fuel levy hike during fare talks, a move he described as deceptive and damaging to trust between transport operators and the government.
“They knew very well that they had this under their sleeves, and yet we sat with them, engaged in talks about the 15% fare reduction, and reached a consensus,” he said.
“It is extremely painful because had we known this was coming, we would have taken a different stance. The reduction wouldn’t have been as deep.”
Mr. Imoro also criticized the lack of consultation with drivers, emphasizing their crucial role in fuel consumption. He argued that the government’s decision to raise the levy without involving key stakeholders was unacceptable.
According to him, the increase in the fuel levy not only undermines the benefits of the earlier 15% fare reduction but also intensifies the financial strain on drivers, making their economic situation even more challenging.
“We are major players in the fuel sector, and it is only fair that the government engages us before taking such decisions,” he bemoaned.
