A tragic incident has been reported at the Bogoso-Prestea Mine in the Western Region, where several suspected illegal miners are feared dead after being trapped underground. Early accounts suggest the group may have suffocated after inhaling toxic carbon gases believed to have resulted from an unidentified smoke, possibly linked to a blast within the mine.

Sources told Graphic Online that the event is believed to have occurred around the level 8 and 9 sections of the underground mine, which is currently operated by Heath Goldfields. The exact number of casualties remains uncertain, with reports placing the figure between 11 and 30.

By 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, three bodies had been retrieved from level 9 and brought to the surface. The recovery operation is ongoing.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, November 16, yet as of Tuesday night, there had been no official comment from authorities or mine operators. The lack of early communication led to suggestions that the incident may have initially been downplayed or concealed. The case has since been formally reported to the Prestea Police, who are now handling investigations.

Heath Goldfields, which recently assumed management of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine, released an official statement on November 19 confirming the deaths of three illegal miners and ongoing efforts to retrieve others who may still be underground.

Official Statement From Heath Goldfields (Excerpt)

Heath Goldfields confirmed that a group of illegal miners infiltrated an inactive and restricted section of the underground mine using unauthorised routes, leading to the tragic loss of three lives. The company expressed condolences to the bereaved families and the wider Prestea community, describing the event as deeply painful.

The company said it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service, the Minerals Commission, and NADMO to support investigations and recovery operations, commending the agencies for their swift response.

Heath Goldfields further assured the public that it remains committed to upholding strong safety standards and stringent security protocols across all concessions. The company also stated its community relations team is engaging traditional leaders and offering support to the families affected.
