Ghana is set to benefit from a wave of strategic energy investments from Indonesia, as the Southeast Asian nation outlines plans to establish renewable power plants and build a cutting-edge oil refinery.

The renewable projects are expected to generate between 500 and 2,000 megawatts (MW), marking a significant step toward enhancing Ghana’s energy independence and sustainability.

This announcement was made by Indonesia’s Honorary Consul to Ghana, Paskal A.B. Rois, during a high-level meeting with Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor in Accra. Mr. Rois also disclosed Indonesia’s intent to explore upstream oil blocks in Ghana, a move aimed at strengthening long-term bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

He further introduced a new water-based renewable energy system developed in Indonesia, describing it as a sustainable solution capable of long-term electricity generation through efficient reuse.

Indonesia also offered to support Ghana with solar energy infrastructure, including solar power plants and affordable solar-powered street lighting systems, reinforcing its commitment to green energy expansion.

The meeting also touched on broader areas of collaboration. Mr. Rois emphasized Indonesia’s desire to deepen trade, education, and technical partnerships. He introduced initiatives such as the KNB Scholarship and skill-building programmes designed to benefit both Ghana’s Energy Ministry and its communities.

Minister Jinapor welcomed the proposals with optimism and praised the long-standing diplomatic ties between Ghana and Indonesia, which date back to the early post-independence years. He expressed Ghana’s readiness to partner in renewable energy, capacity development, and refining infrastructure, noting that such collaborations could significantly transform the nation’s energy landscape.

Present at the meeting were the Chief Director of the Ministry, Solomon Adjetey; the Director of PPBME, Isaac Nyarko Biney; and the Secretary to the Honorary Consul, Vanessa Gifty Howusu.

The engagement signals a new chapter in Ghana–Indonesia relations, with promising prospects in energy cooperation and economic growth on the horizon.
