The Ministry of the Interior has launched a full-scale investigation into claims that Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng survived two assassination attempts while carrying out his official duties.

The decision follows comments made by the Director of Research, Communications and Strategy at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Mr Samuel Appiah Darko, on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, December 6, where he disclosed the alleged attempts on the life of the Special Prosecutor.

During the same appearance, Mr Appiah Darko also alleged that he was handcuffed and assaulted by 17 police officers, sparking public debate, especially amid concerns by some Ghanaians that the OSP has not delivered the expected results since its establishment.

In a statement issued by the Ministry, it confirmed that the claims were made on the television programme and described the allegations as deeply concerning.

“The Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Mr Samuel Appiah Darko, mentioned the assassination attempts on Newsfile on December 6, 2025. He also claimed on the same programme that he had been handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel,” the statement said.

The Ministry stressed that any threat against officials of constitutional and accountability institutions, if proven, poses a serious risk to Ghana’s anti-corruption agenda, which the government has pledged to protect and strengthen.

According to the Ministry, preliminary engagements with Mr Kissi Agyebeng indicate that the alleged assassination attempts occurred before 2025. However, checks conducted so far show no record of any formal complaint or report filed with the Ghana Police Service or any state security agency regarding such threats.

In response to the developments, the Minister for the Interior has issued two key directives.

First, a comprehensive investigation has been ordered into the alleged assassination attempts, with the Ministry emphasising that “crime does not expire.”

Secondly, a separate inquiry has been initiated to probe Mr Appiah Darko’s claim that he was handcuffed and beaten by a group of police officers.

“Since crime does not expire, the Ministry has ordered a full-scale investigation into the claim of assassination attempts. The Ministry has also ordered an investigation into the claim by Mr Samuel Appiah Darko that he was handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel,” the statement reiterated.

The Ministry assured the public that it will provide updates once investigations are concluded and appropriate actions are determined.

Reaffirming its mandate, the Ministry of the Interior said it remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that all Ghanaians can go about their lawful activities without fear.

“The Ministry of Interior reiterates its commitment to protecting all lives and properties to ensure that all Ghanaians can conduct their lawful affairs without fear for their safety,” the statement concluded.
