Several shops at Kantamanto’s Tazani Lane near Ecobank in Accra were destroyed after a fierce Kantamanto fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the distress call was received around 1:31 a.m., prompting an immediate response from multiple fire stations across the capital. The first firefighting team reportedly arrived at the scene at 1:42 a.m. and battled the raging flames for more than three hours before finally bringing the situation under control.
The GNFS confirmed that the fire was confined at about 4:49 a.m. after what officials described as “intensive firefighting operations.” Senior fire officers, including the Acting Chief Fire Officer, the Director of Operations, and the Greater Accra Regional Commander, visited the site to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate ongoing response efforts.
Fortunately, no injuries have been recorded so far. However, property losses are expected to be extensive due to the heavy commercial activity in the area. The GNFS has begun investigations to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Kantamanto, one of Accra’s busiest trading centers, has a long history of devastating fires that have displaced traders and destroyed millions of cedis’ worth of goods over the years.
More updates are expected as the GNFS completes its full assessment.
