AdubianewsA major stretch of the Kintampo highway in Ghana remains completely blocked more than 48 hours after a single-vehicle accident, creating severe travel disruptions and economic strain.
The affected section near Babatokuma, located in the Bono East Region, is a key link between the northern and southern corridors of the country. Since Sunday night, July 27, 2025, no vehicle has been able to cross the stretch, trapping hundreds of commuters.
According to Adom TV’s Bono East correspondent Wiafe Akenten, the gridlock has created a line of vehicles stretching several kilometres in both directions. Stranded drivers and passengers, many without access to food, water, or basic amenities, have voiced frustration over the failure to clear the road. “We are totally stranded here. My tomatoes are spoiling, and I don’t know when we’ll move,” lamented one distressed truck driver.
The economic impact has been significant. Vehicles transporting perishable goods like tomatoes, yams, onions, and fruits have been parked for days, leading to spoilage and potential price increases in urban markets.
A passenger en route to the north from Accra shared, “This is unbearable. We’ve slept in the bus for two nights. No proper food, no washrooms. Why is it taking so long to clear one truck?” These sentiments highlight growing concerns over Ghana’s emergency road management.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kintampo, Isaac Donkor, visited the accident scene and assured the public that the military would dispatch towing equipment.
However, as of Tuesday morning, no such machinery had arrived, deepening the crisis. The delay underscores the lack of immediate response capacity in handling transport emergencies of this scale.
The prolonged blockade is not only affecting domestic travel but is also threatening Ghana’s regional trade. The Kintampo-Babatokuma stretch is a crucial economic artery connecting landlocked nations such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to the ports of Tema and Accra. As calls grow for faster intervention, the situation remains tense and uncertain.
