AdubianewsParts of the Madina Market in Accra were reduced to ashes in the early hours of Friday, September 19, 2025, after a devastating Madina Market fire broke out, destroying several shops and wooden structures.
Eyewitnesses said the blaze started around 1:00 a.m., sending thick smoke billowing into the night sky as traders and residents rushed to the scene. Many could only watch in despair as their livelihoods went up in flames before firefighters arrived.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that it received the emergency call at 1:36 a.m. Fire crews reached the scene within two minutes, but due to the intensity of the flames and lack of nearby hydrants, four additional fire engines had to be dispatched.
According to the GNFS statement, “The fire affected wooden structures, two corn milling shops, and nine containers. It was confined at 3:07 a.m., brought under control at 3:19 a.m., and completely extinguished at 4:40 a.m.” Firefighters also managed to save a nearby one-storey warehouse and adjoining buildings from being consumed by the inferno.
While the property damage was severe, no casualties were recorded. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but investigations are currently underway.
The GNFS assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging communities to cooperate with firefighters during emergencies and to ensure better preparedness against such disasters in the future.
