President John Mahama has announced a record GH¢30.8 billion allocation for the 2026 national budget to fund the government’s flagship Big Push road construction initiative, more than double this year’s GH¢13.8 billion.
The President made the announcement during the Wa Big Push Project sod-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, November 11, describing the massive injection as a bold step to accelerate infrastructure growth, enhance regional connectivity, and position Ghana as a leading trade hub in West Africa.
“This initiative is a cornerstone of our long-term national development agenda,” Mahama stated, stressing that the Big Push would be anchored on quality, fiscal discipline, and public accountability.
He cautioned contractors against poor work and inflated claims, pledging strict oversight to ensure every cedi spent delivers visible value.
“The days of poor construction, inflated claims, and abandoned projects are over. Ghana deserves better. Contractors must deliver quality, on schedule, and within budget,” he said.
Mahama assured that funding will not hinder progress, noting that the Finance Ministry had guaranteed timely payments to compliant contractors.
“Next year, GH¢30.8 billion has been reserved for the Big Push. Once your work is certified and inspected, payment will be made immediately,” he confirmed.
The President also called on residents to support and protect the project’s progress, urging communities to collaborate with engineers and secure materials.
The record-breaking allocation is one of Ghana’s largest infrastructure investments in recent history, marking what officials describe as a turning point in the nation’s pursuit of durable, value-driven public works.
