AdubianewsPresident John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to reinstate July 1, Ghana’s Republic Day, as a statutory public holiday and designate it a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. The announcement was made during the 2025 Supernatural Empowerment Summit at the Perez Chapel in Accra on May 4.
He emphasized the spiritual and historical significance of July 1, describing it as Ghana’s true “birthday.” Although Ghana gained independence in 1957, it was on July 1, 1960, that the nation officially became a republic and cut ties with the British Empire. According to the President, this date marks the full sovereignty of Ghana and deserves to be nationally honored.
President Mahama noted that while the intent to restore the holiday has been declared, the legal process is still ongoing. Amendments to the Public Holidays Act are expected to be presented before Parliament to formalize the change.
As it stands, July 1 remains a commemorative day and is not officially recognized as a public holiday in the 2025 national calendar.
To prepare for the anticipated celebration, a national task force has been established to organize interfaith prayer activities involving both Christian and Muslim communities. The day is intended to be one of rest, reflection, and gratitude to God for Ghana’s continued peace and unity.
If Parliament approves the amendment, July 1 will once again become a day of national rest and spiritual observance in future calendars.
