Mahama demands reparations for African slave trade at AU summit

President John Dramani Mahama has made a passionate call for reparations from countries responsible for the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the colonisation of Africa, insisting that restoring Africa’s full dignity is long overdue.

Speaking on Monday, July 14, at the African Union’s seventh Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, Mr. Mahama addressed the summit in his role as the AU Champion for Reparatory Justice for Africans and People of African Descent.

“Africa’s demand for reparative justice is no longer a mere murmur. It is a unified demand grounded in historical truth, moral clarity, and our unwavering commitment to dignity,” he declared.

The former president underscored the inseparable connection between reparative justice and African identity. “We cannot speak of development without identity or speak of unity without acknowledging the era that has fractured our heritage,” he noted.

Mahama emphasized that genuine development cannot occur without first reclaiming the historical narrative and healing the wounds of the past. He called on the international community to support Africa’s campaign for justice, urging global powers to join forces with the AU in building a more equitable and respectful world.

“Let us work together to strengthen Africa’s voice on the global stage and forge a future rooted in justice and equality,” he appealed.

This latest call adds momentum to the growing international movement demanding reparative measures for historical injustices endured by the African continent and its diaspora.
