A controversial statement has stirred political debate after a leading member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah, popularly known as Benghazi, accused President John Dramani Mahama of being trailed by an “evil spirit.”
Speaking during a media discussion, Benghazi alleged that every time Mr. Mahama assumes leadership, the country faces tragic incidents. He linked national misfortunes to what he described as a spiritual cloud surrounding the President.
“President Mahama is followed by a bad spirit. Anytime he assumes leadership, the country experiences tragedy,” Benghazi claimed, stressing that these occurrences were not coincidental but signs of deeper spiritual issues.
He further stated that under Mr. Mahama, Ghana has witnessed numerous tragedies. According to him, even during Mahama’s tenure as Vice President under the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, as well as his time as a presidential candidate with the late Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur as his running mate, both personalities passed away. For that reason, Benghazi believes President Mahama is being followed by an “evil spirit.”
The comments have sparked mixed reactions, with some Ghanaians dismissing them as superstitious rhetoric, while others argued that the frequency of national tragedies during Mahama’s leadership cannot be overlooked. Neither President Mahama nor the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially responded to the claim.
