President John Dramani Mahama has called on African leaders and their global partners to deepen strategic collaborations aimed at improving healthcare delivery across the continent.
He made the appeal while addressing policymakers, innovators, and health experts at the WHX Leaders Africa event held in Accra on December 9, 2025. According to the President, sustained innovation and cooperation are critical to building a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready healthcare system for Africa.
Highlighting the role of technology and youth-led innovation, President Mahama encouraged young African innovators, artificial intelligence developers, and digital health entrepreneurs to take the lead in shaping the continent’s health future.
“The future of African healthcare will be shaped by your imagination and your ingenuity,” he said. “We’re building this new health order with you and for you.”
He stressed that improving healthcare outcomes across Africa has far-reaching global benefits, noting that a healthier continent will also be more prosperous, resilient, and secure. He argued that Africa’s progress in health innovation will strengthen, not threaten, global health systems.
President Mahama emphasised that Africa possesses the vision, talent, and determination required to transform its healthcare sector but must foster partnerships that acknowledge the continent’s growing importance to global development.
“Africa is not in contest with anyone,” he stated, adding that collaboration, rather than competition, must guide global engagement with the continent.
Turning to domestic challenges, the President expressed concern about the limited capacity of major health facilities in Accra and Kumasi. He noted that many hospitals lack adequate equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and heart conditions.
While commending the private sector for expanding access to modern diagnostic and treatment services, he announced that the government will commit additional resources through the Mahama Cares policy framework. As part of this initiative, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund—traditionally focused on public health institutions—will be expanded to support private hospitals with essential medical technologies.
According to President Mahama, stronger public-private collaboration remains a cornerstone of efforts to build a healthcare system capable of meeting Africa’s current needs and future health challenges.
