Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has defended President John Mahama’s commitment to fighting illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, stating that he has demonstrated clear political will to address the growing crisis.
She made the statement during her appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 21. Ms. Muslim explained that President Mahama not only recognizes the environmental and economic threats posed by galamsey but has also initiated strategic policies aimed at combating the issue in a sustainable and inclusive manner.
“President Mahama has demonstrated the political will to fight galamsey, and this is evident in the measures already rolled out under his administration,” she said.
She noted that the government is pursuing a holistic strategy, one that combines enforcement with livelihood opportunities for affected communities. According to her, the President believes in supporting small-scale miners to transition into legal, regulated operations rather than relying solely on force.
“The President understands that we cannot solve this problem with force alone. That’s why we are also providing opportunities for artisanal miners to transition into legal, regulated mining practices,” Ms. Muslim explained.
She encouraged critics to evaluate the government’s progress based on real policy actions instead of political narratives. Ms. Muslim reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to protecting Ghana’s environment and preserving vital water bodies.
“This fight is about our collective future, and President Mahama is leading it with both resolve and responsibility,” she concluded.
