President Mahama addressing the nation after the helicopter crash

President John Mahama has delivered a poignant tribute to the eight individuals who perished in Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash, describing them as “true patriots” who died in active service to the nation.

Speaking from the Jubilee House on Thursday, August 7, President Mahama emphasized that the lives lost represented some of Ghana’s finest minds, whose dedication to the country remained unwavering until their final breath.

“We have lost some of our nation’s brightest minds,” the president lamented. “This is a moment of shared heartbreak, a time to reflect on the preciousness of life, the sacrifices of public service, and our gratitude for those who dedicate themselves to the well-being of Ghana.”

The helicopter, a Ghana Air Force Z-9, crashed while on official state duty, claiming the lives of both high-ranking government officials and military personnel. President Mahama, visibly emotional during his address, recounted the distinguished careers and selfless service of each of the victims.

He praised Squadron Leader Anala, Flying Officer Ampadu, and Sergeant Addo, who were all part of the Ghana Air Force, for their professionalism and bravery in carrying out their duties.

“These were dedicated members of our Air Force, embodying the best of their profession,” Mahama noted.

He went on to honour the late Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, a former Minister and loyal public servant, and Samuel Sarpong, a veteran statesman with a long record of leadership. Also remembered was Mr. Samuel Aboagye, a rising star in the political landscape.

President Mahama was especially reflective as he spoke about Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, both of whom served in his administration and were among the key voices in national governance.

“Dr. Omane Boamah was a brilliant and dedicated leader. Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed was a passionate voice for his constituents and a champion for environmental stewardship,” Mahama said. “These gallant men each served Ghana with distinction.”

The president’s tribute captured the somber mood of a nation in mourning and highlighted the depth of the loss felt across the country. He called on Ghanaians to come together in unity, offer prayers for the bereaved families, and honour the memory of the fallen with dignity.

“Their final moments were spent in service,” President Mahama added, “and we will forever remember their sacrifice.”

As the country prepares for the state-assisted funeral and national period of mourning, many Ghanaians have taken to social media to share their condolences and express admiration for the contributions of the deceased.
