President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday engaged in bilateral talks with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of TICAD-9, focusing on multilateral cooperation, Ghana’s economic rebound, and the growing security threats in West Africa.
During the meeting, Guterres praised Ghana’s active involvement in the UN system, commending the nation’s commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.

He further lauded Ghana’s leadership role in ECOWAS and the African Union, particularly in addressing instability across the Sahel region.
The UN Secretary-General encouraged President Mahama to sustain his advocacy for collective, regional approaches to security, stressing the importance of unified strategies in tackling cross-border challenges such as terrorism and violent extremism.

For his part, President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s long-standing commitment to multilateralism and emphasized the need for further democratisation of the United Nations to ensure better representation and efficiency in global governance.
He highlighted Ghana’s ongoing economic recovery, noting progress in debt restructuring as a pathway to long-term stability. According to the President, these reforms are gradually restoring investor confidence and setting the foundation for growth.
Mahama also expressed appreciation to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for its continuous partnership. He pointed to a recent UNDP-supported orientation session for newly appointed ministers under the government’s “Resetting Ghana Agenda” as a valuable contribution to capacity building.
