Residents of Mpatuam protest after military clashes leave two dead

Angry residents of Mpatuam in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region have staged protests following the deaths of two people in violent clashes with military officers earlier this week. Among the victims was the Assembly Member for the Esaase Dominase Electoral Area.

The confrontations erupted on Monday and Tuesday after soldiers reportedly confronted residents who were attempting to enter a mining concession belonging to Asanko Gold.

According to Sekyi Michael, the Assembly Member for Mpatuam West, one person lost his life during the initial clash on Monday. Tensions escalated the following day when the military returned, leading to another deadly confrontation that claimed the life of the Assembly Member.

The killings have sparked outrage in the community, with residents accusing the military of excessive force and demanding justice for the victims. Protesters have taken to the streets, calling for transparency and accountability in the handling of the incident.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Minister has visited Mpatuam to commiserate with the bereaved families. He assured residents that investigations are underway and urged them to remain calm as authorities work to address the situation.

Despite this, residents continue to express anger, insisting that justice must be served to restore peace and trust in the community.
