Ghana Confirms Three Mpox Cases, Activates Swift Health Response

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed three Mpox cases in the Accra Metropolitan Area as of May 16, 2025. These are Ghana’s first reported cases this year, prompting immediate public health action.

Two of the new cases involve a 32-year-old man on antiretroviral therapy who showed symptoms like fever, chills, and pustular lesions, and a 34-year-old man with a persistent rash after two weeks of self-medication. The third case, identified in February, brings the total to three. All individuals are experiencing mild symptoms and are under self-isolation while receiving treatment.

In response, the GHS has activated emergency health operations, ramped up disease surveillance, and launched contact tracing to monitor the spread. Public awareness campaigns are also underway to educate citizens on Mpox symptoms, prevention, and safe practices.

Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director-General of the GHS, assured the public of Ghana’s preparedness, noting that established public health protocols are in place to detect and manage such outbreaks. He urged the public to remain calm and cooperative.

Dr. Dennis Odai Laryea, Deputy Director for Disease Surveillance, highlighted the importance of hand hygiene. He emphasized that habits reinforced during the COVID-19 pandemic—like frequent handwashing—are essential in reducing transmission.
