NACOC Hands Over $1.7M Worth of Seized Gold to Ghana Gold Board

Seventeen gold bars worth $1.7 million have been officially handed over by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) during a brief ceremony at the Ministry of the Interior in Accra. The precious metal was recovered by NACOC officers stationed at the Paga border in the Upper East Region.

The gold was being smuggled by two Burkinabè nationals attempting to transport it illegally across the border. Authorities have since charged the suspects with offences related to the unlawful transportation and dealing in gold.

Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, reiterated the government’s commitment to regulated gold trading and praised GoldBod for its ongoing efforts to ensure responsible gold management in the country. He further assured that the Ministry would continue supporting initiatives that safeguard Ghana’s mineral wealth.

Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, expressed his appreciation to NACOC for its diligence in intercepting and recovering the gold. “We’re grateful to the Director-General of NACOC for this collaborative success. It’s a testament to what we can achieve through unity and vigilance,” he said.

Gyamfi also emphasized the need for stronger inter-agency cooperation in tackling the growing menace of illegal gold trade. The event was attended by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Doreen Annan; NACOC’s Director-General, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey; and other top officials from NACOC and GoldBod.
