The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that no casualties were recorded following the heavy rainfall that struck parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025. Despite widespread flooding and significant disruption, NADMO’s swift response ensured the safety of residents in affected areas.
Chief Disaster Control Officer Mohammed Jafaro reported that NADMO received numerous distress calls from residents in areas such as Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie. Emergency teams were promptly dispatched to assist those impacted by the floods.
“So far, we have received many distress calls—residents in Adenta, Tema, and around Kaneshie calling for help—so that is why we have dispatched teams. But no casualty as I am talking to you now,”Jafaro stated during an interview with Channel One Newsroom.
The flooding has been attributed to longstanding issues with poor drainage infrastructure and inadequate sanitation. Jafaro noted,
“Most of the problems we have observed are that there is a lack of drainage in some communities, some of the areas are filled with filth… In some of the areas also we have engineering defects.”
In response to the situation, NADMO has activated emergency hotlines to assist residents in distress. The public is urged to remain vigilant during periods of intense rainfall and to avoid flood-prone areas to safeguard lives and property.
As the rainy season progresses, NADMO continues to emphasize the importance of proactive measures and community preparedness to mitigate the effects of such natural disasters.
