AdubianewsHenry Nana Boakye, National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly condemned the Electoral Commission’s decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency, describing the move as illegal and a direct contempt of court.
Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Tuesday, July 8, Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, questioned the EC’s independence and accused it of caving to pressure from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He expressed disbelief at the Commission’s change of course, suggesting that its decision may be politically motivated. “The Electoral Commission must be very principled. Are they succumbing to NDC’s pressure? Are they trying to save their jobs because the NDC Chairman says they are going to lose their jobs?” he asked.
The Electoral Commission had earlier announced its plan to rerun the parliamentary polls, citing unresolved issues from the 2024 general election in 19 polling stations. However, Nana B argued that this rerun contradicts a High Court directive that only ordered the EC to collate results from three polling stations and declare the winner. “What is left is the collation of three polling stations and the declaration thereafter. What has changed? What has happened?” he questioned.
For him, the Commission’s failure to comply with the court order amounts to institutional defiance. If the EC encountered any challenge in implementing the directive, Nana Boakye believes it should have returned to the court for clarification rather than unilaterally opting for a rerun. “There is a pending High Court order. If you think that a certain arm or institution is not complying with the directive of the court, you go back to the court for further direction,” he said.
Nana B further warned that the EC’s actions could set a harmful precedent. According to him, if political parties begin to believe that disrupting elections can lead to reruns, the integrity of future polls will be at risk.
“The precedent is so dangerous, so catastrophic. If we are not careful, the precedent is that anytime you think you are not winning any election, cause problems, cause chaos, distract the process, so that when the Electoral Commission is unable to conduct collation as a result of the police not providing security, then the Electoral Commission will come out to say let’s go for a rerun,” he cautioned.
Insisting the NPP has already secured a clear victory in Ablekuma North, Nana Boakye revealed that the party has all pink sheets in its possession, showing their candidate won by a margin of 4,014 votes. “We have won this election by a 4,014-vote difference. This is a clear majority. We have all our pink sheets,” he declared.
He concluded with a firm rejection of the EC’s planned rerun. “We will not be part of this illegal process because it is in contempt of court. It is a dangerous precedent,” he emphasized.
