The Akwatia by-election 2025 has sparked heated political commentary, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) questioning the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) choice of candidate.
Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, claimed that the NPP “imposed” Solomon Kwame Asumadu, CEO of Owuo Mining Company, despite sidelining more qualified aspirants. According to him, this decision contributed to the party’s defeat.
“As for the NPP from day one, they knew they were going to lose this election. The candidate they imposed was not fit for the purpose. If they had known, they wouldn’t have tied the other aspirants’ hands behind them,” Gbande stated in an interview with Vivian Kai-Lokko on Channel One Newsroom.
Election Results
The September 2 by-election ended in victory for the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo, who secured 18,199 votes out of 33,819 valid ballots cast. Mr. Asumadu of the NPP polled 15,235 votes, resulting in a loss for the opposition.
NDC’s Strategy
Gbande emphasized that the NDC ran a disciplined campaign, saying: “We went there with a calculated, determined strategy to win the election devoid of violence. And that is one aspect the NPP doesn’t know.”
The by-election was held following the passing of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi.
