The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Professionals Forum has extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the nation following Wednesday’s fatal helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The accident claimed the lives of eight individuals travelling to the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi. Among the deceased were Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology; and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.
Also killed were Dr Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice Chairman; Mr Samuel Aboagye, former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot; Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, co-pilot; and Sergeant Ernest Addo, flight engineer of the Ghana Armed Forces.
“To the fallen heroes, your service and sacrifices will never be forgotten. Your dedication, resilience, hard work, and selfless service are etched upon our hearts in gold,” the NDC Professionals Forum said in a tribute, while urging unity during the national period of mourning. They also called for “a swift, transparent, and thorough investigation into the cause of the accident to prevent future occurrences.”
Describing the crash as a tragedy that interrupted a day meant to spark a paradigm shift in Ghana’s mining sector, the group reflected on the shock felt nationwide. “Our lips could barely form words as we received and watched the news of the crash, holding on to hope for a better outcome,” the statement read.
The loss of two cabinet ministers, a senior security official, and other prominent figures in a single incident has been described as a significant blow to the administration, with the timing of the tragedy amplifying its impact.
