Young members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Kpandai Constituency of the Northern Region are pressing the party’s national leadership to challenge the Supreme Court decision that cost them the parliamentary seat.

Their demand comes after a protest in the area following the ruling, which declared the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Mathew Nyindam winner over the NDC’s Daniel Nsala Wakpal.

Petition outlines reasons for legal challenge

In a formal petition, the youth wing presented ten arguments urging the party to pursue all legal options, including a review of the judgement.

The document — signed by Janfour Wujabon Binipomchie on behalf of the group — raises concerns about the gazette notification date and claims conflicting gazette publications undermined the electoral outcome.

They also argue the earlier Tamale High Court decision relied on documentary evidence and sworn testimony that pointed to significant breaches of electoral laws.

According to the petition, dismissing those findings could set a troubling precedent for future election disputes.

Concerns over electoral integrity

The youth group maintains that administrative procedures such as gazetting should not outweigh the actual voting results at polling stations.

They say uncertainty surrounding multiple gazette notices weakens public trust in the electoral process and threatens the credibility of election outcomes.

The petition further claims grassroots supporters now feel discouraged, believing the party has not adequately defended a seat they consider legitimately won.

Political and democratic implications

Describing Kpandai as a strategic swing constituency, the youth warned that failing to contest the ruling could embolden political opponents and affect future contests nationwide.

They insist seeking a review is a constitutional right rather than defiance, and argue that a rerun election would be the most peaceful way to restore confidence and ease tensions in the constituency.

According to the group, the party’s response will strongly influence youth confidence in its commitment to protect electoral victories.
