President John Dramani Mahama has announced the establishment of a new public university in the Savannah Region, fulfilling a key promise in the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) 2024 manifesto.
Speaking during his “Thank You” tour in Damongo on Saturday, June 14, Mr Mahama said the institution will focus on agriculture and allied sciences to support the party’s “Feed Ghana” initiative.
“This university will not only be symbolic; it will be functional and tailored to support our national push for skills-based development,” President Mahama stated. He emphasized that the school would play a critical role in training professionals for Ghana’s agricultural transformation agenda.
As part of a broader policy to expand tertiary education in all six newly created regions, Mr Mahama confirmed that the new university would be aligned with the country’s educational development goals.
The institution will also benefit from infrastructure investments proposed in the 2025 budget, particularly targeting underdeveloped regions like Savannah.
According to him, the university will help build the workforce needed to drive economic change through agriculture. “This is not just about access to education; it’s about creating the skilled manpower needed to transform our economy from the ground up,” he added.
