Evans Nimako expresses confidence in NPP’s chances in the Akwatia by-election

The Director of Elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, has expressed optimism that the party will retain the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the ongoing by-election despite opinion polls projecting a slim lead for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The by-election became necessary following the passing of the late NPP Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi. Voters in the constituency are currently casting their ballots, with polls expected to close at 5:00 p.m. before counting begins.

Speaking to Citi News’ Sammi Wiafe on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Akwatia, Mr. Nimako maintained that the NPP’s candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, remains the electorate’s preferred choice.

“Sure, we have engaged the constituents and they have given us assurance, and we know that all things being equal, all rules complied, our candidate will emerge victorious,” he stated.

His remarks come in response to a recent Global Info Analytics survey that tipped the NDC’s candidate, Bernard Baidoo Bediako, to win with 53% of the vote, compared to 47% for Asumadu. Mr. Nimako dismissed the findings, questioning their credibility.

“A report that says a majority of the respondents are NPP affiliates, a report that says that the country is in the wrong direction. And the conclusion that the NDC candidate is ahead of the NPP candidate is questionable,” he argued.

Another survey conducted by Sanity Africa between August 1 and 27 also gave Bediako a narrow advantage, projecting him at 52.3% compared to 47.7% for Asumadu, a 4.6-point gap.

Despite these projections, the NPP insists it has the support on the ground to secure victory in the constituency, which has historically swung between the two leading political parties.
