Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) erupted in anger on Friday after the Accra Circuit Court 9 ordered the remand of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye. He is expected to reappear in court on September 19.
The charged crowd, gathered outside the courthouse, hurled insults at police officers and accused them of selective justice. Many were heard chanting slogans and demanding that the police redirect their efforts to solving the ongoing conflict in Bawku rather than targeting their party leader. Some loudly shouted, “Go to Bawku!” as they hooted at the officers.
Abronye was arrested last week and brought before the court on charges of offensive conduct deemed likely to breach the public peace. His detention has fueled political tensions, with loyalists describing the case as a calculated attempt to silence him.
The Ghana Police Service, however, has defended its actions, stressing that the matter is being handled strictly in accordance with the law. It has also appealed to the public to remain calm as legal proceedings continue.
