The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation of the Ghana Police Service following the arrests of TikTok personalities Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof, as well as social media activist Daniel Adomako, popularly known as Sir-Obama Pokuase.
The group is calling for their “unconditional and immediate release,” describing the detentions as “shamelessly biased” and “absolutely partisan.”
In a statement signed by National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, the NPP Youth Wing expressed disbelief that the police would, in their words, “waste resources to arrest and detain young citizens” over a viral video. While acknowledging that the comments in the footage were “unsuitable for the moment,” the group insisted they posed no real threat.
Police sources say Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof were arrested over commentary and threats of harm against President John Mahama.
In contrast, Sir-Obama Pokuase is reportedly being held as part of “ongoing intelligence-led operations” targeting illegal possession and display of sophisticated weapons. According to police, he is assisting with investigations into images and videos he shared online showing individuals brandishing such weapons.
The NPP Youth Wing accused the police of selective law enforcement, claiming that worse incidents involving members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) went unpunished under the same Inspector-General of Police (IGP) when he served as Deputy IGP during an NPP administration.
They also cited the July 11 violent attack on former Minister of State and MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, and other NPP members during the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun, noting that no arrests were made in that case.
“The Ghana Police Service should not be a wimp for the executive,” the statement read. “Your motto is ‘Service with Integrity’, so we ask you, where is the integrity you speak of?”
