AdubianewsDr. Edward Omane Boamah, Defence Minister and outgoing Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is calling for urgent reform within Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), warning that public trust in the institution is hanging by a thread.
Reacting to the EC’s announcement of a rerun in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency, Dr. Boamah expressed concern but remained optimistic that the situation could be salvaged. He believes that political maturity and collective action are now more important than ever, especially with the 2024 general elections fast approaching.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 9, he wrote, “It’s not too late…” a hopeful but urgent plea for national unity in addressing what he sees as a deteriorating electoral process. Dr. Boamah highlighted growing dissatisfaction with the EC’s performance and called on political actors to rise above party lines to fix what he described as a “broken” system.
Specifically targeting the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), he urged them to move beyond partisanship and engage constructively in reforms that safeguard Ghana’s democracy. “Let’s work together to fix the broken Electoral Commission and save Ghana’s democracy!” he appealed.
As debate around electoral credibility intensifies, Dr. Boamah’s comments add momentum to the calls for transparency and accountability. For him, restoring trust in the Electoral Commission is not just about one rerun in one constituency; it’s about preserving the legitimacy of the entire democratic process.
