PRINPAG commends Ghana government for proposing a National Media Fund

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has applauded the Government of Ghana for proposing the creation of a National Media Fund, describing the initiative as both timely and critical to sustaining the country’s media industry.

According to the association, the proposal comes at a period when many media houses—particularly smaller, privately owned outlets- are battling rising operational expenses, declining advertising revenue, limited training opportunities, and broader sustainability challenges.

PRINPAG stressed that these difficulties continue to threaten media independence, vibrancy, and long-term survival.

In a statement signed by its President, David Tamakloe, the association also acknowledged President John Mahama for his renewed dedication to media development.

It recalled that President Mahama first introduced the idea of a national media support mechanism during his previous term, although the initiative was not fully rolled out before the end of his administration in 2016. PRINPAG noted that his renewed commitment gives them confidence that the vision will finally be realized.

The association expressed optimism that this new effort to activate and implement the Media Development Fund will materialise soon.

While welcoming the proposal, PRINPAG urged the government to expedite the processes for establishing and operationalising the Fund so journalists and media institutions can benefit without delay. To ensure accountability, the association recommended strong governance structures—such as a dedicated Secretariat, a Fund Administrator, and an Independent Board composed of qualified professionals.

PRINPAG also encouraged media stakeholders, civil society organisations, development partners, the private sector, and the public to rally behind the initiative, emphasising that a strong and independent media sector is vital for deepening democracy, promoting accountability, and supporting Ghana’s development agenda.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with government and relevant stakeholders to build a resilient, free, and sustainable media environment in Ghana.
