University of Ghana economist and finance expert, Professor Godfred A. Bokpin, has publicly criticized President John Mahama for his lackluster approach to the growing crisis of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.
Prof. Bokpin expressed his disappointment, arguing that the President has failed to show the leadership and urgency needed to tackle the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
Speaking on JoyNews’s Newsfile on Saturday, June 21, Prof. Bokpin stated, “Mr President, when it comes to how you are dealing with irresponsible mining, I am afraid, I am not with you.”
His comments come amid rising public concern over the growing impact of illegal mining on the environment. Galamsey has led to massive deforestation, pollution of rivers, and the displacement of rural communities.
Prof. Bokpin called on the President to take bold and decisive actions to halt the destruction caused by unregulated mining. He urged the Mahama-led administration to match its development promises with strong environmental protection measures.
