Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer – John Mahama, is suspending her 6-day campaign tour of the Central Region, effective close of today, Tuesday, September 22, 2020.
Details of the suspension remain scanty but a communique issued by the spokesperson for Prof. Opoku Agyemang’s campaign team and copied to Ghana Guardian said it is a national decision which was taken in consultation with the flagbearer Mr. John Dramani Mahama.
The release, however, stated that details of the suspension will be made public tomorrow.
“Effective close of day today, the Running Mate will suspend her campaign tour in the Central Region. There are a number of issues for that. However, it is a National decision taken in consultation with the Flagbearer who has also suspended his campaign activities for today. Details will be given tomorrow.”, Mawuena Trebah said wrote in a statement.
Prior to this release, Mr. Mahama had announced he was putting his nationwide campaign tour on hold, citing the growing complaints by members of the NDC of their names missing from the new voter register as the reason.
The former President expressed his disappointment with the many anomalies in the voter’s register as the ongoing exhibition exercise.
Describing voters identification card as the most important element in elections, John Mahama said the anomalies in the electoral process making it impossible to have a free and fair election in December, thereby cutting short his tour.
“A voter register is the most important document in any election if the voter register is not credible or is full of errors; it makes it difficult to have free, fair and transparent elections”, he wrote on Facebook.
