Tensions in Bawku have escalated once again, with the fatal shooting of a commercial driver and the burning of his vehicle on November 2, reigniting fears and sporadic gunfire across the area. The victim, known locally as Maadi, was ambushed while en route from Bolgatanga, marking the 21st fatality in the recent spate of violence linked to the longstanding chieftaincy dispute.
This resurgence of violence follows the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a contested chief who had been in exile since February 2023. Abagre initially fled after an arrest warrant was issued following his contentious installation as chief in Nalerigu. However, an October 17 High Court ruling in Kumasi nullified the warrant, allowing him to return to Bawku on October 26.
Since his return, the area has seen renewed hostility, with two deaths and multiple injuries reported in sporadic clashes. Gunfire has disrupted the community, sparking widespread fear and heightening concerns over further escalation. The protracted dispute over the Bawku chieftaincy, simmering for years, now sees new intensity as factions realign and tensions build following Abagre’s homecoming.
In response, authorities have imposed a 6:00 am to 6:00 pm curfew, with security forces on heightened alert and patrolling the streets to enforce the restrictions. The curfew aims to stabilize the area, yet residents remain anxious as security personnel work to contain the unrest.
Community leaders and residents alike are calling for government intervention and a peaceful resolution to prevent further casualties. The recent violence underscores the deep-rooted divisions within Bawku, where the ongoing chieftaincy dispute continues to challenge peace and stability.
