Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing internet data costs by the end of 2025. The announcement, made during the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day event on May 19, 2025, comes amid rising public concern over the high cost of data in the country.

Addressing the issue, Minister George said, “My promise was that by the end of this year, we will see prices drop — and my promise remains. Just trust the process.” His comments underscore the government’s strategic efforts to address affordability in the digital space.

To spearhead this initiative, a special committee was formed to draft a roadmap for lowering data prices. Impressively, the committee completed its work in just 13 days, a day ahead of its scheduled 14-day timeline. The roadmap, now submitted, outlines practical steps aimed at correcting market distortions that have built up over the past eight years — distortions that the minister says have artificially inflated data costs.

While acknowledging that some measures fall outside his jurisdiction, Sam George made it clear that any changes to taxes or tariffs related to data pricing must come from the Minister for Finance, through legislation laid before Parliament. “No Minister, except the Minister for Finance, can remove any tax or tariff handle as it affects government revenue,” he clarified.

Although immediate reductions in data prices are not guaranteed, the government’s current actions signal a serious intent to ensure that Ghanaians enjoy more affordable internet access before the close of the year.

As digital connectivity becomes increasingly essential in education, business, and communication, this announcement offers a beacon of hope for many citizens feeling the financial strain of staying connected.
