With Martin A.B.K Amidu having resigned as the Special Prosecutor, public curiosity is excited about who is likely to succeed him. This was the very same dilemma Ghanaians had when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo announced [in the early years of his office] that he will get an unbiased and respected Ghanaian appointed to serve the Office of Special Prosecutor to enable his government fight corruption in Ghana.
But the search may get a bit easier as ace journalist, Manesseh Azure Awuni has provided some clue to who could succeed Mr Amidu. He explained that anti-corruption campaigners, himself-alike, had earlier hoped to have either that person or Mr. Amidu as the Special Prosecutor when President Nana Addo reiterated his promise to establish the Office of Special Prosecutor
In an interview he granted Adom FM on the Dwaso Nsem Show with Chief Jerry Forson, the investigative journalist disclosed that the only person suitable and credible enough to work in the shoes of Martin Amidu is Lawyer Akoto Ampaw. He mentioned that his personal assessment taken so far, convinces him to suggest Lawyer Ampaw can serve as the Special Prosecutor.
“The only person in mind is Lawyer Akoto Ampaw. Apart from Martin Amidu, it is Lawyer Akoto Ampaw that we can only point to as a credible candidate to take the role as a Special Prosecutor. When you assess his pedigree, you will find him suitable. He doesn’t entertain wrong doing.”
The Office of the President is yet to make an official comment about Martin Amidu’s resignation and what it intends to do afterwards. Martin Amidu, left on the desks of the Special Prosecutor some unresolved corruption allegations including 5 million Euros Airbus Saga, the Galamsey Fraud, the Contract for Sale scandal and many others that were carried out by government officials in the previous administration.
In the interim, his deputy Jane Cynthia Naa Korshie Lamptey will have to man the entire office. Perhaps the next appointment and resolution will be taken after the December 7 polls.
Sadly, Mr. Amidu noted in his 4-paged letter to the President that he; “does not see any serious non-partisan prospect of any improvement in preventing and fighting corruption on Your Excellency’s next term of Office in 2021.”
