Senyo Amekplenu discusses Ghana’s lithium deal controversy on AM Show

Governance analyst and NPP communications team member Senyo Amekplenu says the controversy surrounding Ghana’s lithium agreement has exposed what he calls the opposition NDC’s “double standards” in mineral negotiations. Speaking on the AM Show, he argued that the NDC’s support for a 5% state stake contradicts its previous criticism of the NPP for allegedly accepting less favourable terms.

According to Amekplenu, the development “shatters the NDC’s claims of better leadership” and raises doubts about the party’s consistency on natural resource management.

“The lithium deal has exposed the hypocrisy of the NDC as they settle for 5%, far below the 10% they once criticised the NPP for,” he said. “It has revealed their double standards and incompetence.”

He added that Ghanaians deserve honesty and clarity from all political leaders, especially at a time when the country is aligning itself with global demand for critical minerals.

The lithium agreement, withdrawn on December 10, 2025, for further review, has reignited national debate over whether Ghana is negotiating fair value for its natural resources. While the majority side maintains that the withdrawal is aimed at securing improved terms, analysts note that frequent political disputes often blur the line between partisan messaging and real policy issues.

Amekplenu urged Parliament and the Minerals Commission to focus on transparency and ensure that any revised deal delivers long-term value to citizens rather than becoming another partisan flashpoint.
