Military Police arrest soldier Williams Mensah for assaulting pharmacist and female customer at a pharmacy near Burma Camp in Accra

The Military Police have arrested Lance Corporal Williams Mensah, the soldier captured on CCTV assaulting a pharmacist and a female customer at a pharmacy, reportedly located near Burma Camp in Accra.

The arrest follows widespread outrage after a viral video showed the uniformed man, in civilian clothing, physically attacking the pharmacist and slapping a female customer during a heated confrontation inside the shop.

According to military sources, Lance Corporal Mensah was taken into custody after an internal investigation confirmed his involvement in the assault. The Ghana Armed Forces are expected to issue an official statement outlining the next steps and possible disciplinary action.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday around 4:30 p.m., sparked public condemnation after the footage surfaced online. In the video, the soldier was seen striking the pharmacist multiple times and turning on the female customer after she attempted to record the altercation on her phone.

Earlier, Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Rashid Tanko Computer, had described the assault as “animalistic behavior” and urged the military high command to ensure justice is served.

Public calls for accountability appear to have prompted the swift action from the Military Police, who have assured that due process will be followed to restore confidence in the security services.
