A man believed to be behind a series of phone snatching incidents at knifepoint was apprehended by residents in Atebubu on Tuesday. Initial suspicions suggested the suspect was Nigerian, but he strongly denied the claim, insisting he is a Ghanaian native of Ejura.
Suspected robber caught in Atebubu quickly became the talk of the town, as a crowd gathered around the accused to question him about his origin and motives. In a tense confrontation, the suspect repeatedly pleaded for mercy, begging residents to spare his life and grant him freedom.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was allegedly found with stolen mobile phones and a knife, which he reportedly used to threaten his victims. His arrest followed a series of complaints from locals about frequent thefts in the area, often carried out under the threat of violence.
At the time of the arrest, the angry crowd debated whether to hand him over to the police or take matters into their own hands. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed as some residents pushed for due process, encouraging the others to escort the suspect to the nearest police station.
There has been no official statement from the Ghana Police Service in Atebubu as of yet, but sources say the suspect is likely to face charges related to armed robbery and possession of a weapon.
The incident underscores growing community frustration with petty crime in parts of the Bono East Region and raises fresh concerns over mob justice and profiling based on nationality.
