The opposition National Democratic Congress has issued a strong warning to the government to as a matter of urgency withdraw military personnel deployed in the Volta and Oti regions ahead of Tuesday’s voter registration exercise.
Speaking at a press conference at Aflao in the Volta Region, the Chairman of the Volta caucus in Parliament, Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzrah said the government is waging a war against them and indicated their readiness to meet them boot-for-boot.
According to him, Voltarians are not cowards so any move by the government to disenfranchise them will not be taken lightly.
“The fire has been lit and we the Voltarians are ready. We are not cowards. I want to repeat it that we are not cowards. We don’t fear people, we only respect and therefore whoever has deployed the military personnel to our borders should call them back immediately.”
Mr. Bedzrah further issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to recall the military personnel in the two regions or face their wrath.
“We’re giving them up to the end of tomorrow, Tuesday, the military personnel must be recalled back to their barracks. There’s no war between Ghanaians and Togolese. We are peace-loving people and therefore we’ll continue to love everybody equally,” he warned.
