Simone Biles has finally made her long-awaited return to the Olympic Games, taking bronze in the beam final won by Chinese teenager Guan Chenchen at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre on Tuesday, August 3.
Competing for the first time since withdrawing from the team competition a week earlier,” Biles won her seventh career Olympic medal, tying her with Shannon Miller for the most by a U.S. gymnast.
The four-time gold medallist scored 14.000 after her performance, while China’s Guan Chenchen, who went last second gold with a winning score of 14.633, followed by Tang Xijing who scored a 14.233 to take silver.
“It meant the world to be out there,” Biles said. “I wasn’t expecting to walk away with a medal. I was doing this for me, and whatever happens, happens.”
The event was the first for Simone since she took herself out of several competitions to focus on her mental health.
