A trader at the bustling Madina Market in Accra caught two women on separate occasions today for allegedly stealing canned food items from her stall.

The incidents, which happened hours apart, have sparked conversations among market-goers about the rise in petty theft and the measures traders take to protect their goods.

In the first case, the trader reportedly caught one woman attempting to make away with an undisclosed number of canned goods. She demanded a payment of GHS 5,000 from the suspect as compensation for the attempted theft. Later in the day, another woman was apprehended with 13 cans of Obaapa-branded canned fish hidden in her possession. The trader demanded GHS 2,000 from this suspect before releasing her.

Both women were eventually freed after negotiations, but the trader has since cautioned others in the market to remain vigilant. Meanwhile, some bystanders raised concerns about the growing trend of suspects being forced to pay large sums instead of being reported to the police for proper legal action.
