Trump-Ramaphosa Meeting Turns Tense Over White Farmer Allegations

U.S. President Donald Trump met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House to discuss bilateral relations, trade, and cooperation. However, the meeting quickly took an unexpected turn when President Trump presented a controversial video compilation alleging targeted violence against white farmers in South Africa.

The footage, composed of old clips that have circulated for years on various social media platforms, included scenes of South African political figures such as Julius Malema and symbolic imagery from a 2020 protest in KwaZulu-Natal. These clips have previously been used by Afrikaner advocacy groups like AfriForum but have been widely criticized for lacking context and accuracy.

Trump referred to the content as evidence of what he called a “white genocide,” a claim repeatedly debunked by experts and South African officials. The allegations suggest white farmers in South Africa are systematically targeted in land-related violence—a narrative South African authorities have firmly denied.

President Ramaphosa responded directly, stating that “crime in South Africa affects all citizens, not just one race,” and reiterated that there is no government-sponsored agenda targeting white farmers. He emphasized the country’s commitment to law and order and called the claims “misleading and damaging.”

Despite the tension, both leaders concluded the meeting by expressing hopes for continued collaboration, though the atmosphere remained visibly strained. Ramaphosa later told the media that while the meeting was “constructive,” it also highlighted the importance of “truthful engagement and mutual respect in international diplomacy.”
