UK Court Jails Man for Teen Assault; He Claims It Would Be Ignored in Nigeria

A Nigerian national, Emmanuel Onwubiko, has been sentenced to two years in prison by a UK court for sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman in Warrington, Cheshire.

The incidents, which occurred last year, involved Onwubiko, 35, repeatedly touching the young woman inappropriately and making explicit remarks. Prosecutors at Liverpool Crown Court revealed that he groped her breast, buttocks, and private area on two separate occasions.

Despite her clear objections, Onwubiko allegedly dismissed her discomfort, telling her that such behavior “wouldn’t be reported” in Nigeria. The victim, overwhelmed and distressed, hid in a bathroom during the ordeal and texted a friend in real time about what was happening. She later escaped to a relative’s home and contacted the authorities.

According to the court, the young woman was so traumatized by the experience that she sought baptism afterward to feel “clean” again. Her courage in reporting the incident led to Onwubiko’s arrest and conviction.

The sentencing has drawn attention to the importance of consent, accountability, and the need for victims to speak out—regardless of cultural assumptions or geographical boundaries.
