Member of Parliament for Walewale, Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has raised concerns over the government’s prolonged delay in appointing a new Minister for Defense, cautioning that it could signal indecision at the highest level of leadership.
Speaking on the AM Show, the MP urged President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize national security and the public interest over internal party politics. He noted that the delay may be influenced by power struggles within the ruling party, as key figures attempt to shape who fills the crucial security position.
“Either some party bigwigs are trying to torpedo the process or trying to determine who they want to fill the vacancy,” he remarked. “But whatever the President does, the cardinal interest should be the interest of the good people of Ghana.”
His comments follow similar criticisms from the MP for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, who described the President’s delay in naming a substantive Defense Minister, nearly three months after the passing of Dr Edward Omane Boamah, as “irresponsible.”
Hon. Kabiru Tiah Mahama acknowledged that the President may be acting cautiously to preserve party unity and avoid internal rifts, but stressed that governance should not be hindered by partisan considerations.
“That is the oath you swore — to protect the interest of the people of Ghana, not the interest of the NDC or any power player anywhere,” he said, urging swift action to fill the vacancy.
The Walewale legislator further expressed confidence that Parliament would readily approve any qualified nominee once presented, and warned that further hesitation could damage public confidence in the administration.
“It doesn’t send a good signal of his readiness and capacity to make decisions,” he cautioned.
