Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, has reiterated his resolve to uphold Ghanaian cultural and moral values by committing to sign the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into law should he assume the presidency after the upcoming elections.
The bill, designed to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in the country, remains under legal review, with the Supreme Court expected to issue a ruling on its constitutionality on December 18. Until then, the bill awaits action from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, pending the resolution of legal uncertainties.
Addressing congregants at the Philadelphia Church in Kumasi during a worship service, Dr. Bawumia assured Ghanaians of his unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s traditional values and moral fabric.
“There are key policies that need attention and completion. Should I become president, I will ensure these initiatives are fully implemented to bring peace and satisfaction to the people,” Dr. Bawumia declared.
He highlighted two critical legislative priorities: “One is the bill against LGBTQ+. I will sign it without hesitation. The second is the Anti-witchcraft Bill.”
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks have sparked further debate on the role of legislation in addressing culturally sensitive issues, emphasizing his vision of preserving Ghana’s heritage while navigating contemporary challenges.
