AdubianewsThe Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has officially confirmed the suspension of the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141). The legislation was set to impose an additional charge of GH₵1 on petrol and diesel and 20 pesewas on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
According to the Ministry, the decision was influenced by a sharp rise in global oil prices, largely driven by escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, as well as the government’s aim to cushion Ghanaians from further fuel price hikes.
Speaking to Channel One TV on Saturday, 14 June, Richmond Rockson, the Ministry’s spokesperson and Head of Communication, stated that the delay is a strategic move in response to market volatility.
“I can confirm that the government of Ghana, as issued by the GRA, has postponed the implementation of Act 1141. This levy would have added GH₵1 to petrol and diesel prices and 20 pesewas to gas. So, yes, I can give you that confirmation,” Mr Rockson said.
He cited both domestic and international considerations, noting efforts to stabilize the Ghana cedi and shield citizens from price shocks. He added that prudent exchange rate management had already reduced fuel prices from around GH₵17 per litre to GH₵11–GH₵12, depending on the Oil Marketing Company (OMC).
Mr Rockson also highlighted the rapid increase in crude oil prices globally over recent days. “In the last three days, crude oil prices moved from $60 to $74 per barrel. This is the highest we’ve seen in five months, and it has disrupted our pricing structure.”
He concluded that President John Mahama has directed the Ministries of Energy and Finance to closely monitor the global and local energy markets, and a new implementation date will be announced when conditions improve.
