The Government of Ghana has announced plans to evacuate its citizens from Iran in response to the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made the announcement via a social media post on Monday, June 16, citing the protection of Ghanaian lives as the primary reason behind the decision.
“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
He also revealed that Ghana’s embassy in Tehran had been shut down with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff.
The evacuation will be conducted through Iran’s land borders and will cover all Ghanaian nationals in the country, including diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents.
Mr Ablakwa stressed the government’s commitment to safeguarding all Ghanaians, regardless of their location.
He further noted that Ghana is closely monitoring developments in Israel and will provide updates as necessary.
“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” he added.
The Minister concluded by reiterating Ghana’s call for diplomacy, urging both Israel and Iran to end hostilities and pursue a peaceful resolution.
