Prof Gyampo Questions OSP’s Motives, Denies Claims About SML Raid Contact

A brewing controversy between Prof Ransford Gyampo and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has sparked public interest, following claims that the academic attempted to meddle in an ongoing investigation at Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML). But Prof Gyampo is pushing back hard.

Taking to Facebook on Sunday, June 22, the Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority rejected the OSP’s version of events, insisting he never called the institution’s office as claimed. Instead, he said his communication was directly with Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, and even that conversation never fully materialized.

“I didn’t call your office, I called YOU,” he emphasized, pointing out that Mr Agyebeng said he couldn’t talk at the time and promised to return the call, which never happened.

The OSP had earlier suggested that Gyampo’s outreach, calls, and messages came while its officers and National Security were lawfully searching the premises of SML. According to their statement, this communication risked compromising an active investigation. But Gyampo firmly dismissed that narrative.

His text message, he clarified, was not an attempt to obstruct justice. Rather, it was a cautionary note to ensure the state does not suffer unnecessary financial setbacks in the course of the probe. “I fully support your mandate,” he noted, adding that he was merely expressing concern based on swirling political rumours suggesting the investigation of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta might be driven by personal motives.

“I only expressed the hope that your intentions are patriotic and not personal. That’s all,” Gyampo explained.

However, what seems to have angered him most was what he described as the OSP’s “unfair insinuations.” By portraying his message as interference, Gyampo said the OSP had cast doubt on its own impartiality. “That makes me then doubt your intentions the more,” he wrote.

Determined to clear the air, Prof Gyampo revealed plans to release the WhatsApp messages he sent to the Special Prosecutor, promising to provide full context and prove that his concern was strictly in the national interest.

In response, the OSP has stood by its statement, dismissing Gyampo’s explanation and reiterating that its investigation into Ken Ofori-Atta is free of bias or personal agenda. The office also described Gyampo’s reaction as misleading and potentially damaging to the integrity of its work.
