Patrick Boamah Urges NPP to Resolve Internal Divisions Before Flagbearer Contest

Okaikwei Central MP, Patrick Yaw Boamah, is urging the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to hit pause on its flagbearer race and focus instead on healing the cracks within the party.

According to him, the urgency should not be about who leads the party into the next general election, but rather how the party reconnects with Ghanaians after its poor showing in the 2024 polls.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, June 23, Mr. Boamah expressed concern over what he described as a misplaced rush toward flagbearer campaigns. He believes internal reforms and rebuilding credibility should take precedence.

“I have stated on various platforms that I am against this approach of selecting a flagbearer when we haven’t fixed the party,” he said. “We need to fix the party to make the party attractive again to be able to win a general election.”

Boamah stressed that restoring public trust and reorganizing party structures are critical steps that must happen before any leadership contest. He challenged the legitimacy of early campaign ambitions.

“That is why I said we need a very organised and disciplined party to elect a president, not a flagbearer, because those declaring to be flagbearers and what have you, what are we standing on?” he asked.

Reflecting on the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat, Boamah pointed to a deep disconnect between party leadership and the Ghanaian electorate. “What some of my people forget is that what led to our abysmal performance was the lack of public trust in our party,” he noted.

He warned that ignoring these internal challenges while prioritizing leadership ambitions would only repeat past mistakes. “We need to build that public trust and confidence again, because it cannot be that you go into an election and produce this result, and all you are interested in is electing a flagbearer. Nobody does that,” he concluded.

Boamah’s message comes as a sharp reminder to party leaders: without unity, structure, and trust, any effort to choose a flagbearer may be built on shaky ground.
