AdubianewsA leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Hamza Suhuyini, has stated that although Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia may be the most suitable figure to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he does not have the qualities required to lead the country.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, August 27, Mr. Suhuyini praised Dr. Bawumia’s calm temperament, composure, and ability to unite his party, stressing that these attributes make him stand tall among other aspirants. However, he argued that these qualities are insufficient when it comes to providing leadership at the national level.
Citing the former Vice President’s record in managing the economy, Mr. Suhuyini questioned what new policies or ideas Dr. Bawumia could present if given the chance to govern. “As to whether he is best suited to lead the country, that is where I disagree, because I have seen his track record, and sometimes I ask myself what exactly Dr. Bawumia wants to come and do. He could not manage the economy as Vice President. When it comes to leading his party, he stands tall. But it is not Dr. Bawumia who would secure them the presidency,” he argued.
The NPP will elect its presidential candidate on January 31, 2026, with Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, and Bryan Acheampong among the leading contenders for the slot.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia’s aide, Miracles Aboagye, has insisted that the former Vice President remains the party’s strongest option ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s performance in the 2024 polls provides the NPP with a solid electoral base compared to any first-time aspirant.
Mr. Aboagye expressed confidence that delegates would rally behind him in the primaries. “In all honesty, Dr. Bawumia stands tall. His temperament is good, not unduly aggressive, calm and collected. His focus on the bigger picture of providing leadership within the New Patriotic Party is commendable. I do not doubt that at the end of the day the delegates are likely to give their mandate to him,” he said.
