AdubianewsFormer Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Bashiru Ibrahim, has advised the government to prioritize the completion of the ongoing Accra–Kumasi dualisation project instead of allocating resources to a completely new expressway.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Bashiru Ibrahim stressed that successive governments have already invested heavily in the project.
“Former President Kufuor started the Accra–Kumasi dualisation project from Nsawam to Nkawkaw. Former President Akufo-Addo continued from there to Apedwa Junction. We planned to put up eight bypasses on that road, at a total cost of about GH¢8.2 billion. As we speak, the government of former president Akufo-Addo has achieved almost 70%. We are just left with 30% to complete,” he explained.
He argued that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration would achieve better financial prudence by completing the outstanding works. “I think what President Mahama’s government should do, which will save us resources and be prudent in terms of financial management, is to continue and finish the 30%. If that is done, it will not take away the need for expansion. But for a government to commit about GH¢1.2 billion and execute a project up to 30%, and then come in as a new government to start a whole new expressway, that raises questions,” he said.
The former YEA executive emphasized that finishing existing infrastructure would not only prevent resource wastage but also provide immediate relief for commuters. He highlighted that the Accra–Kumasi highway, one of Ghana’s busiest roads, remains a critical link in national transportation and deserves urgent attention.
